Non-fiction

Analysis of non-fiction encourages you to think critically about not just what a text, video, speech or article says – but also how you can be critical of the way it makes its points.  To successfully analyse non-fiction, you’ll need to remember that each analytic approach has a certain purpose and your choice of method should reflect what you want to say.

Approaches to analysing non-fiction include:

  • Rhetorical analysis – purpose: evaluating if the text fullfills the inention of the writer
  • Argument analysis – purpose: evaluating if the arguments of the whether the texts arguments are valid and how strong they are
  • Discourse analysis – purpose: revealing how a text articulates a concept and discussing how the text is a part of a wider discourse in a society
